The Interesting Modified silicone

Modified silicone are silicone fluids with additional functionality beyond the already fine properties of common poly-dimethyl silicone fluid. This is achieved through the introduction of various organic groups such as amino, epoxy, hydroxyl, acrylic , thiol, or carboxyl group…etc.

 

The modified silicone can be classified into some types of chemical structures such as single-end, dual-end, side-chain, single-end/dual-end & side-chain type. For example, dual-end reactive silicone is the silicone with functional groups on the both ends of the molecular, while single-end reactive silicone is the silicone with functional groups on one-end only.

 

According to different types of functional groups and substitution positions on the chemical structure of modified silicone , it would impart entirely different applications to the modified silicone.

For example, animo-modified silicone can impart textiles the soft & smooth touching feeling. By introducing EO/PO (polyether) functional group,  self-emulsifying property would be imparted to the modified silicone, that is to say, The polyether-modified silicone can be used as the surfactants with adjustable hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity which could be controlled by EO/PO ratio. Polyether-modified silicone are usually applied in waterborne leveling agents, foam stabilizers for PU foam, or non-ionic emulsifier for Personal care products.

Reactive modified silicone is a reactive compound that can be used as an important material for organic resin modification. By employing silicones in chemical reactions with organic resins, we can obtain silicone-modified resins in which the silicone structure is incorporated into the resins, thus it can improve chemical and physical properties of various resins. These reactions involve the use of silicone which contains functional groups that react with organic groups in resins.

 

When dual-end types of the reactive modified silicone are used in the reaction, the silicone chains attach to the resin structure as a block to produce silicone block copolymers. It is possible to improve resin’s physical properties, including heat resistance, cold resistance, whetherability, impact resistance and flexibility.

Meanwhile, if single-end types are used, the result is a silicone graft copolymers, in which the silicone chains hang from the side chains of resins. It may improve a resin’s surface characteristics, including lubricity, release properties, wear resistance, water repellercy.

Modification of these resins requires the use of different types of functional groups, which are contained in reactive silicone. For example, hydroxyl groups (-OH) are required for urethane resins, (meth)acrylate or hydrosulfuryl (-SH) groups are require for acrylic resins. While silicones typically have poor miscibility with organic resins that lead to poor reactivy. Aiming at this issue, there are some products which offer improved miscibility through the introduction of phenyl group or polyether groups into the structure of a reactive modified silicone. Improving miscibility helps to improve the reaction between the resin and silicone, such that the modifying effect can be achieved using a smaller amount.

 

In addition, by incorporating different types of reactive groups (heterogeneous functional group, such as the combination of hydroxyl group and polyether group), manufacturers have developed products that can be used for multi-modification of resins, which is not possible with conventional products.
